Tindwyl berates Elend for abandoning his people, but he argues that he is supporting the woman he loves and that the Well might provide the power they need to save the people. Tindwyl, not having been privy to the plan for the couple, argues that Vin’s belief in the old legends is ridiculous. As she continues to berate him, Elend orders her to leave, demonstrating just how much more of a leader he has become. Spook joins them, as does Allrianne, whom Breeze has convinced to leave. They make their departure known so that the opposing armies know they are gone, but they loudly tell the city guards that they are seeking help and will return to the city. Vin protects them from archers, and once they pass the armies, Allrianne abandons the group.

The crew watches their departure from the city walls. They discuss the Church of the Survivor, and Clubs voices his distaste for the new religion and criticizes Sazed’s own inconsistent beliefs. Ham sees smoke at the koloss camp.

Straff, who is increasingly ill from what he believes is Zane’s poison, learns of Elend and Vin’s departure.
